In mathematics, a subadditive set function is a set function whose value, informally, has the property that the value of function on the union of two sets is at most the sum of values of the function on each of the sets. This is thematically related to the subadditivity property of real-valued functions.

Definition

If Ω is a set, a subadditive function is a set function f:2Ω, where 2Ω denotes the power set of Ω, which satisfies the following inequality.[1][2]

For every S,TΩ we have that f(S)+f(T)f(ST).

Examples of subadditive functions

  1. Submodular set function. Every non-negative submodular function is also a subadditive function.
  2. Fractionally subadditive set function. This is a generalization of submodular function and special case of subadditive function. If Ω is a set, a fractionally subadditive function is a set function f:2Ω, where 2Ω denotes the power set of Ω, which satisfies one of the following equivalent definitions.[1]
    1. For every S,X1,X2,,XnΩ such that 1Si=1nαi1Xi then we have that f(S)i=1nαif(Xi)
    2. Let for each i{1,2,,m},ai:Ω+ be linear set functions. Then f(S)=maxi(xSai(x))
  3. Functions based on set cover. Let T1,T2,,TmΩ such that i=1mTi=Ω. Then f is defined as follows
